Nitrogen tailored for setting up an aquarium

Qualdrop DuraN is a nitrogen fertiliser designed for ponds that are still developing or require stabilisation following biological disturbances or the use of chemicals (e.g. anti-algae agents).

It supplies nitrogenmainly in the form of nitrate (NO₃), which is the safest form of nitrogen and, at the same time, easily absorbed by plants.

Unlike more ‘aggressive’ forms of fertilisation, DuraN acts more gently, allowing you to replenish nitrogen deficiencies without the risk of sudden fluctuations in parameters or destabilisation of the tank.

Excess nitrogen that is readily available is often utilised first by algae – in this case, the risk is significantly reduced.

Balanced macronutrient support without overloading the aquarium

In addition to nitrogen the preparation also contains small amounts of magnesium (Mg), calcium (Ca) – which results in a slight increase in total hardness (GH) and potassium (K) , which support the overall health of plants and help maintain their proper development during the initial phase of the aquarium’s operation, which may be particularly beneficial in tanks based on soft water or RO water.

The role of nitrogen in a planted aquarium

Nitrogen plays a fundamental role in the structure of nucleic acids, amino acids and chlorophyll. Its appropriate level directly influences the intensity of photosynthesis, the rate of biomass growth and the healthy, lush green colour of the leaves.

Deficiency of nitrogen This most often leads to stunted plant growth, a decline in plant health and an increased risk of algae blooms. Regular and controlled dosing of the product helps to maintain a stable level of this element in the water.

Qualdrop DuraN is designed for use in newly set-up planted aquariums, immature tanks and aquariums requiring the restoration of biological balance.

It is particularly effective in situations where plant growth is limited by nitrogen deficiency, whilst there is a need for gentle replenishment of macronutrients such as calcium, magnesium and potassium.

It can be used as one of the first fertilisers in aquariums based on RO water and an active substrate – usually around one month after start-up, when the first nitrogen and potassium deficiencies begin to appear in the tank.

This combination guarantees that plants have access to all the key elements they need for healthy, vigorous growth.

When should you choose DuraN over N Green?

Both products supply nitrogen, but differ in its form and application.

DuraN is based mainly on nitrates (NO₃), which is the most stable and safe form of nitrogen. This makes it particularly suitable for new, unestablished aquariums and for tanks that have experienced biological issues, where control and predictability of fertilisation are key.

N Green It mainly contains organic forms of nitrogen, which are absorbed more quickly by plants and can accelerate their growth. However, it requires a stable, mature aquarium – otherwise, the excess of readily available nitrogen may encourage algae growth.

In practice, this means that DuraN is a safe choice for getting started and for stabilising the tank, whereas N Green works better as a fertiliser supplement in mature aquariums with well-functioning biological filtration.

Another difference is the macronutrient composition.

N Greensupplies only nitrogen, giving you full control over the other elements.

DuraNas well as nitrogenit also contains small amounts of potassium, magnesium and calcium, so it works best where we want to gently replenish several nutrients at once, without having to apply them separately.

Tip 3:

How should DuraNbe used correctly?

Approximate dosage:

An aquarium with a small number of plants:
0.5–1 ml per 100 litres of water per day

An aquarium with a moderate amount of plants:
1–1.5 ml per 100 litres of water per day

An aquarium with a large number of plants:
2–3 ml per 100 litres of water per day

The dosage should be adjusted to the plants’ growth rate, light intensity and the level of fertilisation with other macronutrients.

For those practising responsible fertilisation (NO₃ control)

1 ml of the preparation added to 100 litres of water corresponds to the equivalent of a concentration of 1 mg NO₃/l. , 0.15 ppm K.

It is best to adjust the dosage so that, prior to the weekly water change, the maximum concentration of detectable NO₃ nitrogen ions falls within the range of 5–10 mg/l

Depending on the nature of the tank and the plants’ requirements, you should increase or decreasethe dosage, adjusting it to the specific needs of the aquarium.
