Product description

Expand

Zoolek Aquatest NO2 allows you to measure nitrite concentrations in the range of 0 to 1.5 mg/L, enabling precise monitoring of one of the most critical stages of the nitrogen cycle in an aquarium.

Why measure the level of nitrites in water?

Nitrites (NO₂) are formed as an intermediate product in the process of protein nitrogen transformation, when nitrifying bacteria oxidise ammonium (NH₄) compounds, before they are converted into nitrates (NO₃).
For this reason, monitoring NO₂ levels is particularly important during the initial stages of an aquarium’s operation, when the biological filtration system has not yet fully stabilised.

It is also worth testing the level of nitrites following major water changes and when there is a significant increase in fish stock, to ensure that this parameter has not risen sharply.

Why are nitrites so dangerous?

Nitrites are among the most toxic compounds found in an aquarium. Even at concentrations above 0.3 mg/lbecome harmful, whilst levels exceeding 1 mg/lpose a serious threat to the health and life of fish and the entire population of the reservoir.

What causes elevated NO₂ levels?

Nitrites are a natural part of the nitrogen cycle and, in a stable aquarium, are rapidly converted into nitrates. However, if the biological balance is disrupted, their concentration may rise sharply. High levels NO₂ They most commonly occur in newly set up, immature tanks, as well as in biologically overloaded aquariums.

Responsible aquarium keeping

Regular testing of NO₂ enables early detection of potential risks and allows appropriate action to be taken before serious losses to the fish population occur. Constant monitoring of this parameter is one of the cornerstones of a safe and stable aquarium.

Purpose

Expand

Zoolek Aquatest NO2 It is designed for freshwater aquariums, both newly set up and long-established tanks. It is particularly recommended for aquariums housing sensitive fish, heavily stocked tanks and during the biological maturation phase of the aquarium, when there is a risk of nitrite build-up (NO2) is the highest.

Tip1:

By using tests for the levels of ammonia and ammonium (NH₃/NH₄), nitrites (NO₂) and nitrates (NO₃), you can actively monitor the nitrogen cycle in your aquarium.
The point at which tests show no presence of ammonia or nitrites, whilst at the same time an increase in nitrate levels is observed, marks the end of the tank’s biological maturation. This is a sign that the aquarium is ready for fish to be safely introduced.
