Zoolek Aquatest Ca-Mg enables the accurate determination of calcium ion levels (Ca²⁺) and magnesium (Mg²⁺) in fresh water. The measurement is based on a titration method, which involves gradually adding the reagent drop by drop until a distinct colour change in the sample is observed. The result obtained allows the concentration to be determined calcium and magnesium in mg/l, as well as total hardness (GH) expressed in German degrees.

Calcium and magnesium – essential elements in a planted aquarium
In planted aquariums, it is not only the total hardness that is important, but also the ratio of calcium to magnesium.

A situation may arise in which GH falls within the normal range, yet the plants still show symptoms of magnesium deficiency. Magnesium plays a fundamental role; it is at the centre of the chlorophyll molecule responsible for photosynthesis.

Its deficiency leads to stunted growth, deformation of leaves and a deterioration in the condition of the entire vegetation.
A magnesium-to-calcium ratio of approximately 1:5 is considered optimal, as it promotes proper nutrient uptake and stable plant growth.

The effects of Ca and Mg on plants and animals
Calcium deficiencystunts plant growth, causes abnormalities in tissue structure and results in poor colouration.

Conversely, an excess of it,which is often found in tap water, is associated with high total hardness and may hinder the absorption of magnesium and trace elements.
Total ion content of Ca and Mg, i.e. total hardness (GH), It is also of significant importance to fish and prawns. Many species tolerate a certain GH range, however, when it comes to breeding, rearing fry or keeping more demanding species, knowing the exact total hardness value becomes crucial.

Responsible aquarium keeping
Regular testing of calcium, magnesium and total hardness enables you to manage the water composition effectively, adjust fertilisation and prepare water tailored to the needs of plants, fish and shrimps.

Purpose

Expand

Zoolek Aquatest Ca-Mg It is designed for freshwater aquariums, in particular planted aquariums, aquascape set-ups and aquariums containing shrimp and fish that are sensitive to water parameters. It is ideal for daily monitoring GH total hardness, as well as when precisely adjusting the water composition to suit the needs of specific plant and animal species.
