Product description

Expand

Salvinia natans is a floating aquatic fern, prized for its rapid growth and its ability to form a natural, velvety layer on the water’s surface, giving the water an interesting texture and an emerald-green colour.

The plant has small, round leaves arranged in pairs on slender stems. Its distinctive feature is its small leaves, up to about 2 cm long, which are round or slightly elliptical in shape and covered on both sides with fine, dark hairs. Thanks to these hairs, the leaves do not absorb water and remain on the surface of the aquarium. The floating leaves, which grow in pairs, are flat and elliptical, whilst the submerged leaf is divided into 3–8 thread-like segments resembling roots. They are attached to short petioles.

Purpose

Expand

This plant is ideal as a floating plant for most types of aquariums – from classic community tanks, through natural-style nature aquariums, right through to biotope and breeding.

Salvinia Natans It helps to reduce the amount of light entering the aquarium, thereby helping to control algae growth and providing more comfortable conditions for fish that prefer a shaded environment. It also absorbs very large amounts of nitrogen from the water, which further helps to reduce excess nitrogen levels.

It works particularly well in aquariums housing betta fish, gouramis, small schooling fish and shrimps, providing them with a sense of security and natural shelter.

Cultivation Conditions

Expand

Salvinia Natans It adapts well to a variety of aquarium conditions. It thrives best under moderate to strong lighting, where it quickly covers the surface of the aquarium.

❗ The nature of light has a key influence on the appearance of plants! ❗

  • In bright light The plant grows faster. The leaves become larger and wider, and their colour begins to take on an intense, emerald-green hue.
  • In low light The plant’s growth rate slows down significantly. The plant takes on a yellowish hue, the leaves shrink drastically in size, and the plant itself becomes delicate.

It does not require the addition of CO₂, although its presence may further improve the growth rate.

It is important to ensure that the water surface is not completely covered, as this may restrict gas exchange and the amount of light reaching the plants below.

To maintain the aquarium’s aesthetic appearance and ensure adequate light reaches the lower parts of the tank, it is recommended that you regularly thin out any excess plants.
