The measurement is based on a titration method, which involves gradually adding the reagent drop by drop until a distinct colour change in the sample is observed. The result obtained allows the concentration to be determined   <\/span><b>calcium and magnesium in mg\/l, as well as total hardness (GH) expressed in German degrees.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Calcium and magnesium \u2013 essential elements in a planted aquarium<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In planted aquariums, it is not only the total hardness that is important, but also the ratio of calcium to magnesium. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A situation may arise in which <\/span><b>GH<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> falls within the normal range, yet the plants still show symptoms of <\/span><b>magnesium deficiency. <\/b> <b>Magnesium<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> plays a fundamental role; it is at the centre of the chlorophyll molecule responsible for photosynthesis. <\/span> <\/p>\n<p><b>Its deficiency <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">leads to stunted growth, deformation of leaves and a deterioration in the condition of the entire vegetation.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b>A magnesium-to-calcium ratio of approximately 1:5<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is considered optimal<\/span><b>, as it promotes proper nutrient uptake and stable plant growth.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>The effects of Ca and Mg on plants and animals<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b>Calcium deficiency<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stunts plant growth, causes abnormalities in tissue structure and results in poor colouration. <\/span> <\/p>\n<p><b>Conversely, an excess of it,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which is often found in tap water, is associated with high <\/span><b>total hardness<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and may hinder the absorption of magnesium and trace elements.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Total ion content <\/span><b>of Ca and Mg, i.e. total hardness (GH),<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It is also of significant importance to fish and prawns.
